the angle of plant, the speed required to get vertical - the timing - all really small cahnges - but does that mean the vault was technically better or worse - or based on all the variables - study the trees to hard and you loose the focus on the big picture - the mythical vaulter may have cleared the bar by 10 cm - damm - now what - the better the technique (including push off) the better the potential for that vaulter to max the height jumped - someone jumping 12 or 13' will never have a 3' pushoff unless they are not even close to reaching there potential PR - you also have to have the ability to put enough energy into the pole so it has the potential to give you a good deal back - unless you are a mutant and can do a handstand pushup and pop your self three feet in the air (ok the swing helps) -perfect polevaulter

No arguments here about Dutch.
For me personally I think of lots of guys have earned the "greatest ever" moniker on one particular day or the other.
Bubka probably had more of those days than anyone else, but Warmerdam had a bunch of 'em himself. Dial made 20' look easy in Lawrence. Buckingham made me wet my pants in Houston one night. Tully made me want to quit the event with 19' and "ooo ooo that smell."
The list goes on and is still getting longer. That is why I love this event!
