how many warm up jumps

If you feel confident with 2 or 3 jumps go with that. If you need 20 you really need to review your warm up. We used to do that back in HS(10+ jumps) but there were often no other vaulters so we would all use it as little pratice.

Remember a warm up is just that, warm up. wait till the bar gets up to impress people

Screw those pop-ups, i only do those in practice...i just go straight to my long run and make sure my step is on while everyone else is waiting in line to do "pop-ups." If my step is on then i am good to go, maybe a couple more and thats it. But thats just me, i have to save my energy.

Pop Ups are pretty worthless in general, but particularly so in a meet. Don't waste your time and everyone elses doing them in warm ups. If you don't know how to get upside down already, a pop up isn't going to help you at a meet. You don't need them to get your "rhythm" either. A good long general warmup with jogging, dynamic stretching, maybe some wall plants or walking plants to loosen up the shoulders, definitely 3-5 pole runs on the track (we even measure ours out with a tape and plant into a towel), 2 in flats, 2-3 in spikes. Then, just set up your long run 6"-1'0 closer than normal, start on your smallest pole gripping down 4-6", and take off the first trip down the runway. Runthroughs to check step are worthless and a bogus way to try to get an accurate step because no one will run the last 4-6 steps the same as they would if they are taking off. You can catch a mid on a runthrough, but it's better to do what Geoff said and just "draw blood." It's the best way to get an accurate mid and step and you make sure you're on a small pole gripping down so you'll get in no matter where you're at. Then we'll swing for a bungee 2-3 times and shut it down.

When I say popups Im talking like planting and swinging from 3L... I dont do stiff pole pop ups at meets or in practice..... 43ft...
On a whole new level 6-20-09

I agree with lonestar, a lot of the warm up should be done off the runway. Most important in big meet with lots of jumpers, do some walk overs and ground valting to get the short stuff out of the way. Then just when I get on the runway I do some full runs until I feel confortable.

At really large meets, I tend to have to wait in line for a good chunk of time before getting my jumps in. It's hard to warm up if you are standing still. I try to get a teammate to hold my spot while I do pole runs or stretch just to stay loose. When I do go up it's 1 run through to check my step, 1 jump to make sure I'm good to go, then 1 more to check standard placement.

Don't you hate it when you're about to go up and they close the runway and call everybody in?
