I will never understand why anyone would ever want to take off at 5m.

Radion Gataullin took off 2 feet out once and actually cleared 18'8" on that vault...that had to be out at 5m+, but definitely wasn't a regular occurence.

Joe was talking about Vadim he was taking off at 4.8-4.9 meters when he was healthy Capping a 5.20 11.2 and still jumping over the top of it Joe told him to get on a 5.50 and start bending a pole. We do all our mids and take off in metric.

heh, I'd be lucky to take off at 11 right now. hey john, you and me are about the same shape and have same takeoff point at those grip heights, and I found out I'm farther out then other people the same height, so I think your right with the midgit arm thing. You didn't go and grow an inch on me did ya?

Wow I'd like to see that. How come he isn't jumping at least in the 18s consistently?

because he basically stiff poles, ive never seen him clear a bar. In warmups he runs and jumps like a foot from outside and makes it to the front buns...

Does seem a little extreme. For example I think Hartwig takes off about 14'3 and he holds about 16'7, 16'9 ?

Granted, I've only seen Vadim vault at the Texas Relays & Big 12s the past 4 years, but if that's indicative how he usually vaults, he is way overgripped and takes off too far out. Out of 30 or 40 vaults, I've seen him roll a pole over maybe 5 times. If he would drop his grip 6" and take off 14'6" instead of 15'6", he'd probably actually roll a pole over consistently and jump 5.90+. Just because you can cap 5.20s, doesn't mean you should.

You can have a ton of physical ability, but if you spend everything you got trying to roll a pole over to justify overgripping then you will never ever vault near your potential.

That jump works best for him with nhis take off he can't scoot up or use shorter poles because he just jumps right over them. When he was healthy he jumped 5.70 in practice right before NC's 2 years ago then he got hurt and has struggled with injuries since. He could jump 6m if he didn't get hurt. He has tried to change his vault and just doesn't work. He was taught to jump that way and if he ever gets healthy again watch out.

I hold at about 14'11" on a 15'1", my step is supposed to be about 12'6" but I feel the best at about 11'9" to 12'2"

I am 5'8" on a 4.60 170

and this 5.20 stuff... holy moly, is there any video on the internet???

well well well welcome to my world. For me capping a 15 foot pole places my theoretical step around 13 feet. at the Indy State Fair vault this summer i started on 16s and i was stepping under @ 13 (i know dont ask), so i went to some 15 foot pacers and i was getting in on a 175 (40 lbs over my wieght at the time).

But to answer ur post jomrus, 15' grip= 13'3'' step and on my 16 foot poles about a 13'9'' or 14' step will make me comfortable. I'd probably need to take of from 15 if i capped a 5m pole. I'll keep working on my long jump skills...
