Loaning Poles

The way I met Jerry Hock was when he showed up at a national masters meet in Florida without poles, I saw him jump on someone else's pole and I realized that I had the right pole. I walked up to him with the pole and told him that it was the one he needed, even though I had never met him before and he had never jumped on Altius poles (this was in the mid-eighties). Turned out I was right, he kicked my a** that day, and we've been friends ever since.

The last time I was jumping well was in 1999, at another national masters meet in Florida, of all places. Charlie Barnard saw how I was jumping, saw my poles, and almost insisted I jump on one of his (a modded Spirit). He was right, and that was the last time I jumped 430 (about 14'1").

Go ahead and let him borrow it for the meet unless its divisionals or state. Winning a dual is not that big of a deal in Montana, But divisionals and state its everyone for themselves.

i didnt loan a pole to anybody but i gave him some tips and he beat our jv pole vaulter by 6 in and he wouldnt have if i didnt give him this info, but i felt bad and i wanted to see what he could really do even though the hight was only 9 ft he place first and ours pv'er got second

We saw the kid last night and he bought his own pole. PROBLEM SOLVED!
Next Problem:
Earlier in the season I officiated the PV at a meet where 8 kids who had never pole vaulted were sent over by their coaches to vault without any poles. I loaned them one of my poles and luckily no one got hurt including my poles. 3 jumps and they were all out. Should I loan poles in that situation?

Next Problem:

Just find really crappy ones to loan out. They are not going to bend them. Instruct them about how to treat the pole (like not dropping it or stepping on them) and tell them if they disobey those rules, they can't use them.

The coach from the other school should not send kids over with no poles without at least talking to you guys first. It is a track meet, not a free pole vault clinic.

Ok! The posts are good... I just have one final thought... The biggest concern isn't the poles being broke... You own the poles... You haved helped the kid... and the coach may become upset if somehow by chance the team lost by a couple of points...

Here it is... Tell the coach to get over it!!! And ask him why he got into coaching in the first place!!!

One more solution! Find out if the discus guys placed... If not... just say... We better get to work on our throwers!

Your job is to coach... Their job is to jump... We are here for the athletes and the love of the sport and winning is just icing on the cake...

Say in 5 years that kid goes to college on a scholarship that under other circumstances he would not have gone! It is all worth it... Until then vaulting is the most exciting event to watch and I don't want to keep anyone from doing something great! Lots of Love and Best Wishes!
