my trainer is an alcoholic ... what should i do?

Unread postby ennairb » Mon Aug 11, 2003 12:26 pm

ok ... i have this guy who's been nothing short of an amazing trainer and he has really helped me a lot and he has improved my strength tremendously, but last week when i showed up to work out he wasn't there and then again today he wasn't there ... and i didnt really know what was going on so i got kind of worried and thats when one of the other trainers told me he's an alcoholic and he does this sometimes and it takes him usually about 2 to 3 weeks to finally come back. she said when he realizes what's going on (in 2 to 3 weeks) he'll call me. he's a really great guy and a really good trainer, but i don't know what to do ... like if i should keep working out with him or not ... my parents don't want me to anymore ... but i really feel that he's done a good job until now and that everyone makes mistakes, so i am willing to give him another chance. everyone is telling me not to work with him anymore and he's not cheap either ... so i was just looking for some feed back.... do you guys think i should keep training with him?? what would u do if this was u?

Is he just a personal trainer working on strength and speed with you, or is he coaching you in the pole vault?

Personal trainers are a dime a dozen, but good vault coaches are few and far between.

In that case, here's my 2 cents for what it's worth:

Give him a second chance - don't assume he missed b/c of the alcoholism, although that's probably why. Don't even bring up the alcohol, but just tell him that you're paying good money to work with him and can't afford to be stood up. Tell him you like his services and would like to continue to work with him, but if he misses any more appointments, you'll be forced to find a new trainer. Maybe he'll shape up, maybe not. Like I said before, personal trainers are a dime a dozen, so if he can't work within those guidelines, find yourself a new trainer.

Good luck!
