CORPUS CHRISTI — A 13-year-old boy was injured about 1 p.m. Saturday at Cabaniss Field during a track and field event, a police dispatcher said.
While pole vaulting, the boy fell about 9 feet and landed on his face on a hard surface, medical rescuers said.
He was conscious while taken to Driscoll Children's Hospital with back and leg pain, officials said.
"He was alert and oriented," hospital spokesman Mike Bratten said.

I was there. I have no idea what the CT means by "hard surface". The kid landed squarley on the matt. Nothing hard about it. He did land awkwardly face first. Lots of coaches were there, the same coaches that coach the kids at school during the regular track season. It was just one of those things that happens. I pray for the young man.
