John Pennel set the WR 9 times over a 6 to 7 year period. Only Bubka has set it more times (I think). He vaulted at NE Lousiana St. He was the first freshman to vault 15' (in nation or at his school ???). He was born in 1940 and died in 1993 (53 years young). He was the second vaulter over 5m and the first over 17'. If anyone has any other info. please post it.

Better story is the gentleman that, in my opinion, would have beat him to the 17' barrier, Brian Sternberg. If you look at the records, Sternberg was neck to neck with Pannel through 5meters and up heading toward 17'.

Not to make a bad pun or anything based on your post, but didn't Sternberg literally break his neck on a trampoline?
Question?

I know that he had the first 17' jump in the dirty souf- Natchitoches, LA at Northwestern State. By the way, any friends who wondered where I am, I am back in East Texas where I belong, and I will be training and jumping from here again.

yes. brian sternberg broke his neck attempting a quadruple (pardon my spelling) backflip on a trampoline. he was paralyzed from the neck down.
