This was posted on the Track and Field News message board today by Garry Hill. I thought some of you might get a kick out of it.

T&FN Gets Letters!

While cleaning out an old file today I came across this missive that the magazine received in 1990:

<<Dear Track & Field News,
I am giving you a gift of a dollar [one was enclosed!] for your trip to Japan. I am a world weightlifter. My name is [the name gets zero hits on google]. I beat a legal press record of 1000 pounds over 40 times in 1982. I've beaten the record over 50 times. It is most weight lifted at once by any human being.

Just after I beat the record the government tried to kill me by droping an atom bomb on me. It happened late at night in a remote area of Montana. A small number of people and animals died in Montana. I was the only one to live in that atom bomb.

It's been almost ten years since that atom bomb. So the Japs aren't the only ones to get hit by an atom bomb. Montana got hit to in the 80's.

President Ron R. didn't like the idea that I beat the heavyest lift. The government wrecked two of my cars, broke into my house and took money out of my bank account during 80's. Things are better in 1990. The new president doesn't do negative things to me.

I thought it was important that your organization know that U.S.A. had an atom bomb drop just like Japan in the 1940's. My car was burnt at the atom bomb site. The bomb melted all my car wires. It took me an hour to fix it. It only lasted a day until I got out of nuclear Montana. I wish you luck on your trip to Tokyo.

[the term "wasie scholar" actually yields three google hits, two of them lawyer-related}

(edited to fix a few typos; the remaining odd constructions are his originals)
