ok, i'm going to say that banning assault weapons to begin with was a PR stunt by congress, and here's why:
if you look at how they define "assault weapon," it, first off, includes a list of weapons that look like military weapons, then they say that this semiautomatic assault weapons can't have any of the following: the ability to accept a detachable magazine, a folding or telescoping stock, a threaded barrel, a pistol grip, a forward grip, or a barrel shroud.
what's interesting to me about this legislation is that it basically just deals the way the aesthetics of the weapon. it didn't ban weapons which fire the same ammunition as an AK's and Thompson's for instance; and because of that gun manufacturers started to manufacture the same guns they had been manufacturing, minus the illegal pieces. Functionally speaking, "assault weapons" have never left the legal market.
