East Kentwood senior Abby Shanahan broke the Michigan Interscholastic Track Coaches Association indoor track pole vault record with a jump of 12-feet, 1 inch in Saturday's state meet at the University of Michigan.
Shanahan, who placed fifth at last June's Michigan High School Athletic Association state outdoor meet, beat the previous MITCA mark of 11-feet, 6 inches set in 2005. Shanahan had a vault of 11-feet, 8 inches in qualifying.
Her record does not surprise coach Stephanie Stephenson.
"She has no fear, and she works so hard," said Stephenson said, who credits boys coach Dave Emeott for teaching Shanahan the event's fundamentals. "She's such a dedicated athlete. She's one of those athletes who gives everything they have."
Shanahan was fifth in the MHSAA state meet in the pole vault last June with a mark of 10-feet, 10 inches.
