Pole Vault: 2009 World bronze medalist and reigning European champion Renaud Lavillenie of France is the man to beat. He could become the first Frenchman ever to win the world title. Fellow Frenchman Romain Mesnil, Australia's Steve Hooker, Malte Mohr are the top challengers. The reigning world champion, Hooker should be a bit rusty having just one competition under his belt in 2011. But winning the 2009 title on just two attempts showed he has what it takes when it counts. Also watch for Pawel Wojciechowski , who smashed the 23-year-old Polish record with a vault of 5.91m August 16.

Korea opportunity for rusty Steve Hooker at World Champs

MEDAL PROSPECT: WA's Steve Hooker is looking for success at next week's World Championships. Picture: AFP Source: AFP

WESTERN Australia will field five athletes among a 45-strong Australian Flame contingent at next week's world athletics championships in South Korea.

Realistically, the State can only expect one medal, from pole vault champion Steve Hooker. However, there are a few outside chances.

Steve Hooker (pole vault): Hooker recently had his first competitive vault in a year, achieving 5.45m at the Monaco Diamond League and earning headlines such as "Hooker flops".

The height was far from his personal best of 6.06m, but it was his first jump since October 2010 and his first on new poles.

Hooker's record demands more reverence than labelling him a "flop", but Daegu will be the biggest test of his career. He isn't in his best form, even admitting prior to Monaco that he may struggle to defend his world championship.

If he doesn't keep the crown, let's ensure things are kept in perspective. The goal is London.

Alana Boyd (pole vault): Boyd, last year's Commonwealth Games champion, came out at the start of the season and jumped a 4.60m personal best, installing herself as Australia's second highest women's jumper in history, behind Kym Howe.

That should see her through to the final. However, Boyd will likely need a new PB to steal a medal.

Im guessing you wont have to jump super high to win it. From what i have heard they are calling for rain which always makes thinks really interesting.

After seeing him compete in person and his mental edge, i gotta give the win to renaud.

The next 4 will be a dogfight between

hooker, big rig (aka Miles), grande (aka Scott), and Mohr

rain?! :crying: I've seen hooker jump 5.60/5 in rain before so he'll be in the fight. Renaud will take off on anything, so I doubt the rain will phase him too much (but you never know, he NH'd in New York with rain). Mesnil tends to be the guy to just hit the pole no matter what, so I doubt we'll see a NH for him, at the very least. Either way, rain or no rain, it should be an interesting meet. -6P
