Alana Boyd in race against time after knee surgery
Warren Lynam
ALEXANDRA Headland’s Commonwealth Games gold medallist, Alana Boyd, is in a race against time to be fit for the Athletics World Championships after undergoing surgery yesterday on her bothersome right knee.
The pole vaulter was rushed into surgery at Brisbane’s St Andrew’s Hospital after consulting a specialist in Melbourne, who determined the injury was worse than expected.
Boyd could not be reached yesterday but her father, and fellow Commonwealth Games gold medal-winning pole vaulter, Ray Boyd, said she was still hopeful of being fit for the world championships in South Korea in August.
“It was bloody unlucky because on Sunday night she got named in the Australian team and on Monday morning she got told she had to have the knee done,” Ray told the Daily yesterday.
“It’s hoped that she’ll be back (for the world championships). It’s certainly not ideal and it’s certainly disappointing, given she’s really starting to jump well.
“She’s just starting to make her mark on the world stage now. She jumped a PB over in Perth, so she’s ranked pretty high in the world now.
“It’s disappointing, but the big goal is next year with London (Olympics) coming up, but it was always going to be good to get away and have some competition over at the world championships.
“It’s hoped that she’ll back into shape, but having a broken interruption just isn’t the way to go.”
Boyd has had an ongoing problem with the knee, which kept her out of last weekend’s Australian Athletics Championships in Melbourne.
On Monday she sought a second opinion and an ultrasound revealed she had a mass of fluid in her knee.
Boyd, who won gold at the Delhi games with a vault of 4.4 metres, was granted a spot in the Australian squad for the world championships despite sitting out the national championships.
Selectors granted her a free pass after she jumped a personal best of 4.6m in March.
She is hoping to be back on the track within four weeks.
