Isinbayeva returns
02.02.2011

Two-time Olympic champion, 27-time World record holder in the women’s pole vault Yelena Isinbayeva returns to athletics after a 1-year break, and the 20th Russian Winter will be her first meeting.

Lena, why the Russian Winter?
The first time I competed at the Russian Winter was last year, and I very liked it. I liked all, the meeting organization, the residence conditions and the food service. The food was so good, so I even had to control myself sometimes not to overeat. In general, the organizers worked very well and took care of the competitors, which is always pleasant. In addition, I like that the Russian Winter is an IAAF Permit meeting and collects strongest athletes of the World.

What can you say about the area and the competition atmosphere?
The CSKA area is comfortable, clean and light! I was nice surprised by judges’ skills. They didn’t delay the warm-up and the competition, worked clearly and coordinated. And I want to thank Russian fans, who know athletics and know how to support athletes. I personally was supported by applause and screams of the crowd. I always feel support of a crowd, which helps me to jump highly.

Last year, you had a big supporting crowd. What’s about it this time?
I seldom compete in Russia, and my family and friends watch me on TV in general. So, when I came to Moscow many friends of mine came to support me. This time, I will have a supporting team as well, and my parents will specially fly from Volgograd.

Do you feel nervous before a competition?
I’m sure that my time-out helped me. I realized that I can’t stop at the level I reached and I’m capable of greater. I don’t feel nervous and I’m completely sure of myself. And, I want to compete at the Russian Winter every year!

INTERIVEW - Nerveless Isinbayeva back to reclaim throne

By David Martin

NEWCASTLE | Thu Feb 3, 2011 9:08am EST

NEWCASTLE (Reuters) - World pole vault record holder Yelena Isinbayeva returns to action on Sunday after almost a year out to repair a battered ego and rediscover her love of the sport. She is feeling, she says, not a shred of nerves.

The Russian held a packed Beijing Bird's Nest Stadium in her thrall in the 2008 Games, soaring solo late into the night to better the world record once again having long ago seen off all-comers to win a second, successive Olympic gold.

Her bewitching mixture of chutzpah, glamour and an extraordinary gift for her chosen discipline had long confirmed her anyway as global track and field's biggest female draw.

But within a year, the strain began to tell as chinks in a hitherto flawless competitive armoury appeared culminating in a shock defeat at the World Indoor Championships in March having failed to post even a legal jump in the outdoor event in 2009.

Those results, she said, flattened her ego and she went away to lick her wounds and rethink her life and approach to a sport which has consumed her since she was 15.

Now, aged 28, she is back and ready to reclaim the spotlight, starting on Sunday at the Russian Winter Meeting in Moscow. Isinbayeva is returning to her homeland to start again.

"No, I am not nervous at all," she told Reuters before making her way to Moscow this week after a winter of training at her Italian base in Florence.

"I have had several months of training with my coach Vitaliy Petrov and we have prepared well for this indoor season.

"I would say my training this winter season has been very good. What we expect in Moscow, I cannot say for 100 percent sure but I know I am in very good shape and condition.

"So there is no need to be nervous or concerned. I am healthy and very motivated to do my best. Plus I am competing in Moscow in front of many wonderful fans and I always enjoy coming to Russia to compete."

SERIOUS TEST

Isinbayeva, whose first serious test after an 11 months absence will be challenging for the European Indoor title in March, has meets also scheduled in Donetsk and Stockholm.

Although very important fixtures in assessing her form, the two-time Olympic champion said regaining her World Outdoors crown remains the primary aim for the year.

"We have not looked past this indoor season," Isinbayeva coached by Vitaliy Petrov, continued. "I want to first re-establish myself and show that I am on top of my event again.

"Then we will look at outdoors. But of course the most important for me is Daegu and the Outdoor World Championships in August."

The two-times Olympic champion, holder of 15 world outdoor and 12 indoor records and still determined to better the tally of 35 set by her mentor Sergey Bubka, is not setting any immediate targets of how high she can vault.

At present, her personal best -- and the top mark in the world -- is 5.06 metres.

"We will have to see how each competition goes and what happens," she said. "I cannot make any predictions. Every competition presents new situations and you have to adapt to the circumstances.

"I am not looking past this weekend in Moscow," she insisted although admitting her next appearance at Bubka's meeting in the Ukraine where she has set six world indoors records might lift her to achieving something special.

"I like that I go to Donetsk to Sergey Bubka's Pole Vault All-Stars the following week," she said. "I have always performed well in this event and I enjoy it very much.

"Then I will compete in Stockholm for my first time indoors. So that is something special for me. I have heard a lot about the surface at the arena from other vaulters so I am very interested in competing there too."

Yelena said 16-08-2010 "But all these three months when I had break, I woke up and I was wondering, "What (am) I going do today?," She never think once to say hello to on her facebook fans and say thank you on her birthday.

Yelena use her facebook only as a notice and promotion board. She does no interaction with her fans.

Isinbayeva victorious on return in Moscow

MOSCOW (AP) — Russian pole vaulting great Yelena Isinbayeva was victorious on her return to action at the Russian Winter indoor meet Sunday after an 11-month hiatus from competition.
Isinbayeva, who announced her departure from the sport after finishing fourth at the Doha World Indoor Championships in March, cleared 4.81 meters to beat compatriots Svetlana Feofanova, the European champion, and Alexandra Kiryashova, who both jumped 4.56.

Feofanova claimed silver because of fewer failures at lesser heights. Polish World Champion Anna Rogowska managed 4.46 to finish fifth.

Isinbayeva attempted 4.91 — 15 centimeters short of the world record she set in Zurich in 2009 — but didn't get close on any of her three attempts.

Isinbayeva makes winning return

February 6 2011 at 06:15pm

Russia's pole vault queen Yelena Isinbayeva returned to competition in style, by winning at the Russian indoor Winter meet.
Moscow – Russia's pole vault queen Yelena Isinbayeva returned to competition in style at the Russian Winter indoor meeting winning the event, landing a season's best result of 4.81m here on Sunday.

Isinbayeva needed to execute only one attempt at 4.61m to win the competition and gain sweet revenge over Poland's Anna Rogovska, who defeated her at the world championships in Berlin and Doha.

Later Isinbayeva, who has set and incredible 27 world records - 15 outdoor and 12 indoor - during her career so far, also cleared 4.81 on the first attempt to eliminate any doubts in her supremacy in the pole vault sector.

But she was unable to clear attempts at 4.91.

“I am very excited to return to competition!” said the two-time Olympic champion and world record holder, coming back after a competitive break of almost a year. “I missed it so much! And I also missed that feeling of adrenalin in my blood.

“I was set to win this event and I'm very glad I managed to do it at home in front of my supporters and my parents, whe attended the event,” she added, while also targeting some new world marks.

“Speaking about new records, I'm set to refresh the list of pole valt records this season,” she insisted.

Fellow Russian pole vaulter Svetlana Feofanova finished second with a result of 4.56, while Aleksandra Kiryashova was third with the same result.
