For those of us who are "Metrically Impaired", Svetlana's 4.75m was 15' 7" and Giuseppe's 5.71m was 18' 8.75".

I would be totally lost without the "Big Green Book".

We still live in America don't we? I'm not prepared to give up the flag. I like good old American food. I like walking into a convenience store and finding someone that speaks good english, and I like meet results that I don't have to take extra steps to convert. But thats just me. I also stand in front of the microwave wondering why it's taking so long.

I'll tell you though, if it weren't for Achtungpv we might be hard pressed to find timely results. For that I am thankful. Long live Achtungpv!

metrics are starting to have more meaning to me, considering even college seems to be going by that sometimes... not when we're actually vaulting, but the end result is written in metric...

and of course the standards are naturally metric now... when I first started vaulting my freshman year in hs they were using inches a little bit...

of course we all need to remember that at these college meets the results are typically measured in metric. which means you usually lose a little in the conversion. one meet i jumped 16-1 and it was measured in inches, but when converted to metric and back it went to 490 and then to 16'.75". of couse when you jump with meters every weekend you can pick it up pretty quick. i can think metrically from about 4 meters until about 6.14 meters.(and from 0-80 cm) but that is about it.

I can remember only a few, 4.0m (13' 1.5"), 4.90m (16' 0.75") and 5.0m (16' 4.75") because they are popular pole lengths when we order. PVJunkie will like that. Also 5.50m (18' 0.5") because we have two vaulters closing in on it this year.

With standards I can only remember two. 40cm which is 15.5" (to close in my opinion) and 80cm which is 31.5" and a very safe landing area.

Simple way to decipher metric stuff......

Find a height that you do know in metric, for instance 4 meters is 13'1.5.

10cm=4inches
15cm=6inches
30cm=12 inches.

With that in mind,
4.10=13'5.5
4.15=13'7.75
4.30=14'1.

Or we can break it down into even feet

since 14 feet is 4.30, then we know that 15 feet must be 4.60, and 16 feet is 4.90, 17 feet is 5.20, 18 feet is 5.50, 19 feet is 5.80, and 20 feet is 6.10.

That is how I learned the metics system. If you know the equivelants you can virtaully figure out any PV mark....The throws get tougher!

Whenever we have a high school meet at a college facility, I generally get the job of converting the vaulters standard settings from imperial to metric. I taught myself just like swtvault suggested.
I agree that 19m in the shot or 14m in the triple just does not "click" yet.
