Just got word from Poland that the guys both made the final. Maston Wallace and Joe Berry both cleared 5.10m in different flights. Both are jumping on borrowed poles. Joe reports that conditions were tough, similar to NCAA outdoor. Their poles never arrived in Poland. Maston's never left the US and Joe's are over there somewhere but who knows where. Somebody made a huge effort to get them poles that were close to their normal series. Final is on Saturday.

my runners are in poland but i had to stay here with the 4 x 400 getting ready for beijing... my 200 meter guy runs in about 20 minutes..

joe has shown to be one that thinks "where there is a will there is a way"..

good job "coach" .. i know he will make you proud..

Most of the car's stolen in Holland end up in Poland. I'll hope for Joe that he will get his poles back.

Pole vault competition resulted in a seventh place tie for Tennessee's
Joe Berry while Maston Wallace of Texas placed 10th. Berry cleared
5.10m/16-8.75 on his second attempt, but wasn't able to get over
5.20m/17-0.75. Wallace opened at 5.00m/16-4.75, passed 5.10m/16-8.75 and
then went out at 5.20m/17-0.75.

Too easy for pole vaulter Holzdeppe - IAAF World Junior Championships - Day Five Evening Report

It took very little effort for Raphael Holzdeppe to show why he is World junior record-holder and an honour to Germany’s great pole-vaulting tradition.

The 18-year-old needed just two attempts made deep into the competition on Saturday to take his first international championships title.

With the exception of home favourite Pawel Wojciechowski, the rest of the field were out of the title hunt by the time Holzdeppe picked up his pole.

A first-time clearance at 5.40m was no problem for the athlete who earlier this year equalled Maksim Tarasov’s World junior record of 5.80m. Wojciechowski was also clear at that height, but failures at 5.50m and 5.55m meant the German’s success at 5.50m was ultimately enough to end chances of what would have been a popular victory.

“I had to wait well over an hour for my first attempt and that was hard,” said Holzdeppe.

“Once I got over 5.40m, things got easier. My clearance at 5.50m was very easy.”

He then had three failed failures at a would-be Championship best of 5.72m, but his thoughts now turn to the Olympics.

“I don’t have any particular targets, but we’ll see what happens there,” he said.
