Tennis/ATP Challenger Series: Bubka Jr to play in Malaysia Open

The son of Sergei Bubka (pic) is competing in the Malaysia Open ATP Challenger Series starting today at the National Tennis Centre.

THE son of former world pole vault champion Sergei Bubka will be leaping on Malaysian soil soon.

But Sergei Bubka Junior will be pouncing on a tennis ball instead, and making forehand and backhand returns.

The up and coming Ukrainian player will be playing in the US$150,000 (RM510,000) Malaysia Open ATP Challenger Series which starts at the National Tennis Centre today.

Tournament director S. Uthrapathy said: "He will be playing in both the singles and the doubles."

The 20-year-old Bubka is ranked 368th on the ATP Tour ranking and fourth in his country.
His father broke the men's pole vault world record 35 times and is widely regarded as one of the best athletes of modern times.

The qualifiers start today while the main event begins on Monday.

Meanwhile, Lawn Tennis Association of Malaysia (LTAM) president Datuk Abdul Razak Latiff said the Malaysia Open will be held annually for another four years.

The "challenger" is currently only the second ATP event in South East Asia after the Thailand Open.
