Vlasic wins female European athlete of year award
Friday October 5, 1:43 AM

LONDON, Oct 4 (Reuters) - Croatia's world high jump champion Blanka Vlasic has been voted Europe's female athlete of 2007.
Vlasic, 23, is the first high jumper to earn the title, European Athletics said in a statement on Thursday.

She finished ahead of last year's award winner, world heptathlon champion Carolina Kluft of Sweden. Russia's pole vault world record holder Yelena Isinbayeva was third.

Vlasic won all but one of her 19 outdoor competitions in 2007 and became Croatia's first world championship medallist, taking the title in Osaka with a clearance of 2.05 metres.

The male European Athlete of the Year will be announced on Friday.

I cannot resist, but I need to share this with you.
I am so happy and proud. I know Blanka since she was born.
I was in same Track and Field club with her father Josko who was excellent decathlonist. We were practicing together, we went to competitions, had same coach. Of course, Blanka almost made her first steps at track. I know well what Josko was doing to provide her at least basic conditions for training in last 5-6 years, dedicated to stay at home with family and not go anywhere. And finally, they all did it.
