10.02.2009
Pole Vault star Danny Ecker will be the centre of
attraction at the 4th International Athletics PSD
Bank Meeting 2009 in Duesseldorf on February 13.Among the bevy of stars that are expected to throng the Arena Sportpark for the 4th International Athletics PSD Bank Meeting Duesseldorf 2009 on February 13, all eyes will be on Reigning European Indoor Pole Vault champion Danny Ecker who is still looking for his first title at the meet.
The 2007 IAAF World Championship bronze medallist has his reason to feel optimistic about his chances at the event which is a part of the series of European Athletics Indoor Meetings.
"The indoor season is very important for me. I am in good shape, and the atmosphere in Duesseldorf is always great and additionally it's a good opportunity to test for the season's highlights in the summer," said Ecker.
The 31-year-old is planning to test a new carbon pole at the meet.
"The carbon pole that I am trying is lighter than the old ones but also more difficult to handle. Let us see how it works out in Dusseldorf," he said.
The going is not easy for Ecker as he will have to contend with a strong field in his title bid. Leading the list of challengers will be former World indoor champion Tim Lobinger and the European Athletics Emerging star of the Year 2008 Raphael Holzdeppe.
Ecker had a special word of praise for young Holzdeppe.
"With his eighth place finish at the Olympic Games in Beijing Holzdeppe really took the cake, he will be the one to watch out for," added Ecker.
The organizers are expecting a sellout crowd at the premier German Indoor event yet again.
"In 2008 we had a sell-out crowd with 2000 spectators and I reckon that this will be the case this year too," said August-Wilhelm Albert, Managing Director Sales at PSD Bank Rhein-Ruhr eG, the backers of the event.
The pan-European TV station Eurosport will broadcast the meet live from 20:00 to 22:00 hrs.
The past two editions of the meeting at the Arena Sportpark have both been reckoned among the top indoor meeting in the world.
With the IAAF World Athletics Championships slated to be held in German capital city of Berlin from august 15-23, the Duesseldorf meet will certainly play an important role in boosting enthusiasm about the sport in the country.

8 Euros is around 10 USD or 12.8 CAD.
14 Euros is 18 USD or 22.5 CAD.
For that money I almost can't go to the movie here. Transportation and overpriced popcorn not included.
