Brad Walker auch in Karlsruhe bärenstark
Frisch aus den Vereinigten Staaten in Europa eingetroffen, nutzte Weltmeister Brad Walker am Mittwochabend das Stabhochsprung-Meeting in Karlsruhe, um seine gute Form mit einer Höhe von 5,90 Metern zu unterstreichen.

Der 27-Jährige, der in diesem Jahr schon 6,00 und 6,04 Meter überqueren konnte, war vor einer prächtigen Kulisse im Innenhof der Hoepfner-Burg erst bei 5,70 Metern, die er im ersten Versuch übersprang, in den Wettbewerb eingestiegen und hatte zugesehen, wie sich seine Gegner vorher mühten. Bei seiner Siegeshöhe machte er es allerdings spannend, meisterte er sie doch erst im dritten Anlauf.
So wurde der gut aufgelegte Franzose Jerome Clavier (5,75 m; Bestleistung) noch um den Sieg gebracht. Auf Platz drei kam Oldie Jeff Hartwig (USA; 5,70 m), der sich mit seinen 40 Jahren vor eineinhalb Wochen noch für die Olympischen Spiele qualifiziert hatte.
Die deutschen Starter sprangen an den ersten drei Rängen vorbei. Alexander Straub (LG Filstal) und der Deutsche Meister Tim Lobinger (LG Stadtwerke München) landeten mit jeweils 5,60 Metern auf der Vier und Fünf, Björn Otto (LAV Bayer Uerdingen/Dormagen) wurde mit 5,40 Metern Siebter.

Bei den US-Olympia-Trials drei Tage zuvor noch an den ersten drei Plätzen vorbeigeschrammt, trumpfte bei den Frauen Jillian Schwartz in Karlsruhe auf. Die 28-Jährige bestimmte die Frauen-Konkurrenz. Als sie 4,50 Meter im zweiten Versuch überquerte, waren die Gegnerinnen schon in die Zuschauerrolle verdammt.
Die Ludwigshafenerin Lisa Ryzih und die Schwerinerin Martina Strutz teilten sich mit jeweils 4,27 Meter den zweiten Platz.
