I got hit with a pretty bad case of mono a week ago, and the fatigue is pretty intense. I stay awake for 3 hours, then I nap, then stay awake for a few hours, then sleep etc. I have NO energy, and before I knew I had mono, I tried running and could hardly finish a mile...okay, to be honest I didn't finish.
(Normally I can do 4 miles before I start feeling tired.) Anyway, track season starts in about 2 weeks, what am I supposed to do?! I can't vault if I have no energy...any suggestions?

Use those 2 weeks before the season starts to rest up and get healthy! When you start having energy again, just start out slow. Don't stress about pole vaulting stuff now, it won't help. Just focus on getting better.

STOP STRESSING!!!! That will do nothing to help....some people don't believe in thsi type of stuff but alot of doctors think that a positive mind set can help start healing quicker and make it more efficient. Basically just use this time to get healthy...and if you aren't healthy by the time season starts don't start! Mono is hard to get over to you should start out really slow when you start felling better.

One of my vaulters 3 years ago got mono right in the middle of the season. luckily it was at the end of indoor, so he had a few weeks to recover and didn't miss many meets. Just concentrate on getting better. its early in the season still, so you're not going to miss that much.

Jodie had mono and was vaulting and 3 other sports. They said the biggest problem is that your liver (I think) swells with mono. If your liver is still swollen with the mono, you should not do anything to take the chance of rupturing your liver. When her liver was not swollen anymore, then she starting jumping and adding back sports activities that she could do "as she felt able to." Be careful and get that checked. It would be pretty easy to rupture a liver if you land wrong or on the crossbar or get rejected onto the runway because you are too tired to penetrate and vault.

it's actually your spleen. My brother had mono a couple years ago and didn't know about it. We had been snowboarding for a week and on the last run of the last day on the last jump in the snowboard park he tried for a 540, came down with his arm in his mid section, and ruptured his spleen very bad. He had massive internal bleeding and was in the hospital for a week. He came very, very close to having surgery to get it removed. It's scary s***.
If you have mono and you come down on the cross bar in the lower part of your back, you could very easily rupture your spleen in much the same way. So if you think you might have mono, get it checked out. And don't kiss anyone.

NOt that this would be an issue, but you're also not supposed to drink a lot of alcohol at any time while having mono. I had a roommate who was getting over a bout of Mono one summer that decided to go out with us to celebrate getting better and drank a little more than he was supposed to. The next day he woke up with nice case of jaundice! It was hilarious!

Had it outdoors Soph yr in college - did not train - slept - jumped in meets until only teammates left - they quit for day - trainer always present at pit because of spleen issue - was not fun
