A forum to discuss overall training techniques, nutrition, injuries, etc. Discussion of actual pole vault technique should go in the Technique forum.

Indycoach - what this suggests is that there is some problem - however small - with his plant and jump. Video him from side, front and rear to see what is happening - with the take off foot when the pole tip hits the box -where his hands are at the same time - are his shoulders square - is he driving the right side from hip to top hand -assuming right handed- forward strongly at the instant of the plant.

I have always done this drill one handed (just the way I was taught in '94)I'm thinking from your initial describtion that you recommend doing it with both hands on the pole?

As the guru Petrov told me when I asked him about doing drills one handed -he said 'you dont vault with one hand so why do any drill with one hand". I have never seen the sense of this method -BUT what is my opinion worth, so I am not entering into any discussion about it. As I have discovered in other areas of this forum, opinions are like anuses - everybody has got one. Unfortunately in many cases the former are not as useful as the latter. ;)

I hate that drill. The pole hits my groin every other time I try it. Makes for a very uncomfortable warmup. I guess you could say it works on a high elongated take off but so does doing it with a colapsed bottom arm.

His take off when he drifts to the side seems to be the same, but what I did notice is his speed. I think that the problem he has lies in his speed on the ones he doesn't get through on. I have a girl that is not confident enough to jump before feeling the pole connect with the back of the box. How do I get her confidence up so that she can do this correctly? We did the work in the long jump pit already and she will jump before it is in the sand, but will not keep the same technique when we move to the actual pit.

one handed

i dont know about the rest of you, but although we dont vault one handed i found that doing what some people might call a one haned "pop up" really help me learn how to swing fast and long, but the key is that you do it for distance rather than height.

does anybody else do this drill?

The only time I really spend with this drill is for this main point.

How come when a young vaulter is only using one hand and plant they can stay straight.

If they add the bottom hand the go into a spin. I do the one hander as a precurser to the point the with two hands on the pole it is simply a one hander with the bottom hand resting on the pole.

This is a strange correlation. I am sure it is right as I think back on past experience, but my question is why? Why does grip height from six steps correlate to takeoff distance from the box? What is the technical, physical, biomechanical connection?
