Tempting. I am about 5 hours away but it's a straight shot down 101 from where I live... probably too much driving for one day though.

So where do you register at? I checked http://trackclub.prefontainerun.com/index.php?id=13 and there is nothing there, do you have another link or information.

Vaulters hit the street next week

By Staff Reports

Pole vaulters will be showing off their skills during the Blackberry Arts Festival again this year.

Renamed the Stan Solomon Street Vault in honor of the longtime Marshfield coach who died this year, the event will be held on Saturday, Aug. 22, along Fourth Street in Coos Bay.

The event is held each year at the same time as the popular Blackberry Arts Festival in downtown.

The competition starts at 10 a.m. Dozens of top pole vaulters in the state have been invited to attend.

A number of former Marshfield and North Bend pole vaulters plan to compete in the metal pole all-comers portion of the competition, said Stuart Woods, who is coordinating the event with Dave Eckes.

For more information, call Woods at 269-0618.

Tumbleweed, I got your PM but couldn't reply because of your account settings. Below is what I tried to send you.

Hi, I'm not involved with the event, I just had a copy of the entry form and saw you needed one. However, on that form there are two names with phone numbers. I suggest you contact one of them to check about pole availability.

The memory of longtime Marshfield standout pole vault coach Stan Solomon was honored last week when a group of athletes participated in the fourth-annual street vault during the Blackberry Arts Festival in downtown Coos Bay.

Solomon, who started the event to give people a chance to see pole vaulting in a community venue, died in January.

Renamed the Stan Solomon Street Vault, the event was sponsored by the Prefontaine Track Club and sanctioned by USA Track & Field.

Athletes ranging in age from 13 to 72 participated in the event.

North Bend High School senior Sammie Clark was impressive while clearing 12 feet, matching her lifetime best set while winning the state title last spring.

Club members Natalie Hill and Austin Howerton, both 13, also were impressive in their efforts, said Fran Worthen, one of the officials at the event.

John Altendorf of Corvallis, 63, who holds the world record for his age group, cleared 13 feet and tried to set a new record at 13-4, but was unsuccessful.

Jim Matejka of Springfield, who is 72, showed superb technique while clearing 8-6, Worthen said.

Louis Baucom, 62, of La Center, Wash., was another crowd favorite while clearing 13 feet.

The best vault of the day, by past Marshfield state champion Greg Eckes, was a 15-foot clearance.
