What is you best thoughths about getting vertical??
Yeah. I always had a great rock back in warm-ups and stuff and then, when I get in the air I want to not get veritcal. I had a coach that tried to do to get me to go vertical it just would not work. It's funny b/c I would do every thing else he said and exicuete it but then I would not get vertical. What would you tell one of your kids in this situtations who could probably get 15 if he would do this

well thats exactly what my coach has been telling me, lol. Pop ups are a little different than in a real jump. This is because
A.) you have to wait longer before initiating the swing, to get the most power into it, and
B.) in a real jump, you have to fight to bend of the pole while trying to get vertical on it, while in a pop up all you have to fight is yourself.
to get more vertical, go on a soft pole from a short run, and try to rock back almost like you are doing a backflip, and it should feel like you are falling backwards if you do it right. Make sure you start vertical throughout the entire jump after you swing, landing on your back, just like a pop up. Have your coach just keep encouraging and telling you to rock back farther, and once you are doing that well go on your normal run and try it. It will be harder in your normal run now, because you will be fighting a lot stiffer pole, but just keep working at that, and you will be fine.

I agree. When I have great whips to vertical it feels like i'm not penetrating at all but the results are spectacular. It almost feels like you're gonna fall short and come down on the box, but if you trust your whip and pull thru to vertical you should penetrate no problem. And the more power you put into your whip the earlier you will be in position before the pole uncoils towards the crossbar. Again it's easy to do on little poles in practice but at meets on comp. poles it's a lot tougher to get over the 'new feeling' which could cause a mental block and you not pulling all the way to vertical like you would on smaller poles.
I personally don't like to suggest this but only if you and your coach knows what they are doing...a push in practice helps you work on your whip to vertical.
A good take-off is a given in my above description.

I have found putting a bungee up beyond the length of the pole may help when you practice swinging, just because you have a reference to realize that you WILL make it in. This also allows you to practice not looking at the bar when you swing, just drop the shoulders and dont worry about it.
