There are many models out there of how to pole vault. The two most common are the Petrov model, and the Earl Bell/Tuck and shoot model. Which model of vaulting do you follow and why?

This is an interesting question.

First of all, I use the tuck and shoot method in my jump, that is very obvious if you have seen my film or seen me jump. However, I have read a lot about the Petrov model, and I believe that the Petrov model is more effective than the tuck and shoot model, only in the fact that it is based on energy conservation throughout the jump. And if you maintain more speed into the vault, I believe you should be able to jump higher. Bigger Velocity at Takeoff = Bigger Jump (Essentially)

Now, the question was, which model do you use and why? I use the tuck and shoot model because thats how I first started, and bad habits are hard to break. Which model do I think is the best? The Petrov Model

im assuming the petrov model is the one where u keep your leg straight the whole way. ive been taught thats better because by keeping the leg straight you keep down pressure of the pole so it doesnt unbend too soon. then you can rockback all the way and invert as the pole uncoils. by tucking that takes away the downpressure, the pole uncoils early and you dont invert up the pole as well. makes sense to me, but then again there are a LOT of elite vaulters that tuck and shoot and go high, so that obviously is a good method too. i ve just been told keeping the straight legs better

i dont think i use any model in particular (mainly because i have no idea what they are or why they are different)

what I do is i watch my own videos and compare them with several professional vaulters, and mix and match what seems to work best, and then try to duplicate that mixed model myself. I rarely use the same jumps to do this, because i know that every jump is different and no jump is perfect. Also, i have read scores (if not hundreds) of vault articles, books, and manuals from different eras and piece together what works for me. I do this mainly because i don't have a coach, and it is just me and our other vaulters coaching eachother, so we learn from example.

I believe the petrov model will load the pole more, while the tuck and shoot will give you more self-made explosion at the peak. The petrov will give the same force, just energy given into the pole and then released back to your body as it throws you more. I think the ideal jump would be to load the pole with the petrov model, but once you are fully inverted, bend your knees a tuck slightly, so that when the pole recoilsyou give it some extra push yourself. Im not sure, it seems to me that would give you the most push, but then again physics may prove me wrong.

what about the row row row your boat, until you never invert behind the pole- Mr Curran's current theories of coaching when getting paid. He vever vaulted that way himself at Crespi when he set the 17' 1/2" Ca st record. Now broken mby the Man-o-the-year(so far) Roth.

Personally, its all about the run up!!!! I vote Petrov. Anyone know a coach who has a vaulter with a higher mark EVER than this coach????mmmmmmm? Didn't think so. BUBKA UP!!

i use the tuck and the petrov to some degrees, i have started the bad habbit, but recently i have been swinging with the tuck but try to straiten my legs quicker. i can do the petrov model to some degree, but to to where it is more effective for me at this point in time than the tuck model.

over the summer when i am going to help out all summer at my coaches vault camps, i am going to work on converting completly to the petrov model because i believe as all others on the forum have said!

i attempt the petrov model but its takes time and why it does look better to me and has produced higher vaults so why wait to get started.
