I need some help - im getting worse it could seem

Unread postby Messiah62 » Wed Apr 12, 2006 11:57 pm

Age: 16
PR: 9.6
Pole: 12ft 140lbs in transition -> 13ft 145lbs
I run a 5 step from 70.6feet take off of 8

I used to use a the 12ft pole but my coach was saying that i was getting to much bend for me and i could possible break it and it doesnt have enough strength to get me any higher. She always tells me that my main problems are i need to plant higher and stand taller. I guess im sitting on the pole taking alot of its momentum away. This causes me to curl up into a ball when trying to get inverted and i cant get my legs straight up then. Is there anything i could do to help me plant higher and taller? It seems as if im trying to jump to hard so i bend my knees to get energy but it hurts me instead...

Please help me!

Thanks

no a sliding box is either wooden or plastic, its flat on the ground and you run towards it and plant your pole in it and when you jump you sorta push the box along so it slides. heres one you can buy online or you can build one out of wood. if youve never seen or used a sliding box then its a little harder to explain

I think that you've got your answer right there: work on taking off tall with your top arm fully extended straight up, chest driving up, on the tip of you toe when you plant, and jumping up high.

Slide boxes will help that.

You may be making to big of jump in your pole selection. A 12’140lb pole to a 13’ 145lb is a definite challenge. It is critical that you and your coach understand pole selection and different brands of poles. Polevaultpower has a pole selection chart. Depending where you live you should check into camps and/or clinics and purchase the book Beginner to Bubka. Good luck this season, have FUN and be safe.
