hi, my name is scott, i am a freshman, and i have freshman conference coming up in 2 days. this whole year i have done great in practice and tehn very very crappy in meets. i jumped about 10 6 to 11 in practice then in a meet i jump 8 6 to 9. i was wondering if anyoen could give me any advice on how to jump in meets as i do in practice, it may just be a mental thing which im sure thats what it is.

You're probably trying way too hard in meets. Make the next couple of meets a practice. Relax and you'll probably do as well as you do in practice. Don't try harder in the meets..........

Get on the runway, take a deep breath and relax. Forget about everything else around you and just focus on getting over the bar. Don't run until your mind's set, and make sure u don't get distracted. Keep your eye on the bar, make a strong plant, and before you know it, you'll be flying over it! The key to everything is FOCUS!!!!!!!!
And also, don't b intimidated by the officialness of everything. Don't think about which attempt it is and stuff, just go like in practice.

HAVE FUN! if your having fun 99% of the time youll do better, and if you dont do better, your still having fun vaulting so who cares

Please don't aim for or lock your gaze with the bar...you will just vault for it and knock it down. Instead, try looking at or aiming two or three feet above where the bar is at...then you will be soaring over (and not through) it. Or, you could be like me and not even look at the bar at all.

I agree; don't think about the bar. If you do what you need to do to improve the technique of your vault, you will clear it. I coach a few vaulters who jump great with a bungee, but when I put up the bar they just look at it and change the whole vault...so your problem is common. We've been putting bars up in practice with a higher bungee to aim for. That might help if your problem is worrying about clearing the bar, but if it's a mental thing (like if you get nervous or something), just relax and have fun!
