Re: When to break and swing, getting off the top
If you want to get into an inverted position before the pole recoils, you MUST NOT 'hang your left foot for about 1/2 a second'!!!! After finishing the take off with a complete extension of the take off (assuming left -and asuming you have taken off in the right spot)) leg and ankle, you MUST IMMEDIATELY WHIP the left leg forward and up over your head.
You must NEVER throw your head back if you want to get vertical. if you do, your feet will almost certainly drop out toward the bar.
Folks - please oh please - if you are going to give advice please ensure that it is good advice. At best this is a case of the one eyed man in the kingdom of the blind but at worst it becomes the blind leading the blind on this forum.
The pole vault has been held back by myths and misunderstanding for far too long - please do not propagate more of either. Go back and study the previous posts on this and every other topic or else you are wasting the immense resource that this forum can be.

Do I want to be inverted before the pole recoils, and will this give me any problems with ending up shallow??

Yes you want to swing from the moment you complete your plant/take off! If you swing correctly it will continue to put energy into the pole and keep it bent/drive you deeper into the pit! Here is a link to an Alan Launder article that explains this idea perfectly:
