Better to use the "Relative Stiffness" chart that Jan Johnson (among others) has published.
where could you find this?

I'm on a 13' 160, I want to move to a 14' 155, the 155 is stiffer?
Yes!!!
This is a "Relative" guide, not an absolute.
Transitioning to a longer pole is harder because the sail piece is higher. One of the pole engineers or mfg.s could explain it better than I could.
I can say that following this chart will provide a smooth transition.
I moved a vaulter to a 15' last year. He was on a 14'-6 165. I moved him down to a 14'-75 and worked up to an 80 and then an 85. He moved right to a 15'-70 with no time spent on the front buns or in the box.
This year one of my middle school vaulters made a straight transition from a 11'-120 to a 12'-110. Got over a bar with the standards at 24, the first day out of the shipping tube.
Read straight across the chart. If the pole you are trying to get on is more than one line away you are going to be in for a rough ride.

Big Mastodon - What happened to the 14-75 you mentioned in your May 8 Post??? 14-65 to 75 would be a tough, but doable transition.
I do have a 14 175 spirit, but it is in rough shape and I dont know if I can assure its safe. Its very old and the white wrap is ripped off in a lot of places. Its really dry rodded and has no flex. Its hard to describe but something doesnt feel right about it. The 15 75 is in much better condition. I think Ill give the 75 a few run throughs and if I feel confident then Ill work with it longer.

I tried out the 14 175 and Im getting in deep every time. I still dont feel like im getting any pop out of it though. Im going to try out the 15 175 tomorrow and see how that goes. Im gonna hold at my 14' pole grip and move up a few fingers each time until I can get in at the top. Anyone have tips for this transition, its not that big of a switch I dont think? The 14 footer was a 15 flex and this one is 18.3. The 15' pole feels a lot softer than the 14'er. Thanks.

a 14' to a 15' is still a 20 pound jump. plus you have to long jump a foot more to get to the pit. but if you really are blowing through it you might be able to do it- i don't really know you!
also, your PR is 12'6? if that's all you jump on a 14' pole, you need to improve your technique to have any shot at 15'. Have you seen the efficiency chart? according to that, to be an efficient vaulter you should be going over your handhold by around 12'6 to 13'. (i can't do it either, but my point is i doubt you will get 2'6 in height off a 1' increase in pole legnth; you need to make your technique better as well to get 15')

that's too bad, but you're probably right- i used a really old pole one time this year and it snapped on me. i'm pretty sure it was the pole and not my jump, b/c i've used lighter poles the same day w/ the same kind of jump and they were fine.
stay safe!
