Poles Rotation: What causes it?

Unread postby ADTF Academy » Thu Jan 19, 2006 1:55 pm

I think this is a topic that needs to be addressed. I beleive many vaulters and coaches have a misconception on this topic. I think this is a great opportunity with the Reno Summit coming to sit down and have you post how and why you think the pole rotates.

Please don't answer anyone elses post just provide why and how you think the pole rotates.

This is the fundamental question that we as vaulters and coaches have gotten away from and for that are underacheiving.

just so everyone is clear, what do you mean by "How do you think the Pole Rotates"? There are a couple of rotational components to the pole during the vault: the "rotation" that occurs when the pole moves to vertical and the rotation of the pole in the box during the vault. I'm assuming its the first one, but I think you should be clear about what you are asking so everyone is on the same page.

During the poles rotation in the box (its axis) it must take the vaulter past vertical if the pole rotates completely. Therefore they are both the same in this question. How and when the pole passes vertical is a different story that is behind the scope of my question to you. I mean when in terrms of if it was straight or bent. Don't worry about that for now.

I am simply making the point HOW and WHY do you think the pole rotates about its axis, which in return takes the vaulter past vertical. I don't see two different rotations here. They are the same. As the pole rotates about its axis at some point on the Circumference of the circle for a straight pole or along the Parobola for a bent pole it must pass vertical, but only if the pole rotates completely. If I am wrong here please explain the multiple rotations the pole has as it rotates about its axis in the box once again I am not talking about when the pole goes past vertical, but merely its rotation.

The rotation of the pole will still take you past inversion no matter how you look at it unless your on to big of a pole and you can't rotate it. My question is simply HOW and WHY do you think the pole rotates or doesn't rotate based on each jumping performance.

The second rotation I was referring to was the rotation of the pole that causes it to "bend to the side" during the swing. I just wanted to avoid any confusion as we've had the question of "how do you bend the pole out to the side" before. :)

Well I suppose you can call that a rotation. It is more a movement than a rotation, but I suppose anything that rotates is a rotation. :) Nah once again that is not the scope of this question. Rotation of the bend to the side or when the Pole bend moves past vertical are not the issues here.

Only why and how it rotates.
