Moving up a pole

I just got a new 13' spirit moving up from a 12 mystic and was wondering if it's possible to move up the pole too fast. I'm getting plenty of penetration (too much actually I think) but I feel like moving up the pole will just cover up gaps in my technique (like not finishing my swing, not getting inverted etc.) and I also feel bad holding at 12' (now) and not even vaulting ten. I'm vaulting 3 feet below my handhold. However, one of the best coaches from around here said today at the meet that I need to move up on my pole.
