John Billetz reviewed the recent action by ASTM International Committee on Sports Equipment and
Facilities regarding specifications for helmets utilized in the pole vault event. NFHS Track and Field
rules do not mandate the wearing of a helmet, nor do they preclude the wearing of a helmet. State
associations may choose to establish a policy for wearing a helmet in the pole vault event or may
leave the decision of wearing one up to the local school, coach and/or student athlete and his or her
parents. No action was taken.
