The bar bounced twice before falling during Ben Cogdill's second attempt at a personal record in the pole vault.
However, Cogdill had already clinched the Young Men's (high school juniors and seniors) pole vault competition with a mark of 15 feet, 5 inches on Sunday at the 29th annual Track City International Classic at Hayward Field.
He was unable in three attempts to set a PR of 16- 1/2 , half an inch higher than his current PR, which he has cleared four times this summer.
Cogdill, who won the Class 3A state pole vault title the past two years before graduating from Estacada High School, cleared his first and second attempts of 15-0 and 15-5, the latter winning him the competition.
"They felt decent," Cogdill said. "I've definitely had better jumps, but they didn't feel too bad."

Cogdill is scheduled to attend the North American Pole Vault Championships in Clovis, Calif., on Aug. 5.
"It's all the top jumpers in the nation," Cogdill said. "I'm just more going off a mark. Hopefully I can get mid-16s there at least, get a new PR. That's more of what my goal is."
He won the regional event on July 4 in Tacoma to earn the bid to the Championships.
Cogdill's summer goal is to clear one foot higher than his best before he enters college at Portland State in the fall.
"I want to get 17 (feet), but I don't know how realistic that is," he said. "(I need) just a couple of little tweaks in technique and getting on the right pole."
Second-place finisher Chris Barkley set a PR of 14-11 on his second attempt.
"I started at my PR just to get some extra jumps in at the higher height and it paid off," said Barkley, who recently graduated from Central Catholic and will compete for Idaho State next year. "My previous PR was 14-6, which was my opening height (today). It's a great accomplishment, starting at my PR to get a new one; it's a great day."
Annelise Bertleson cleared 12-0 to win the Young Women's pole vault Sunday.
Kylee Gleason finished second with a best of 11-5 3/4 and Lindsay Beard of the South Eugene Track Club placed third at 10-11 3/4 .
J.J. Juilfs of 2 Rivers Track Club in Springfield was one of seven winners from The Register-Guard's circulation area, taking the Youth Boys 100-meter hurdles in 17.08 seconds and the Youth Boys pole vault at 10-11 3/4 .

No he didn't. He wasn't even the top guy.

Ben may not have won the competition as you point out, but he sure is an exciting vaulter to watch. I have had the pleasure of jumping with him at several of the All-Comers meets at Hayward Field in Eugene this summer.

Definitely! He jumped 16' at Alki Beach and looked like he has more in the tank.

I just hate it when newspapers get their facts wrong :P

That was me!

i took second there. that was actually a really funny day, cause i showed up 20 minutes late, with no warm ups or a pole for that matter. i ended up using a 15' 175 i borrowed from ben. and he is an amazing vaulter, but don't knock the little guy here. that thursday, i had three narrow misses at 15'9", and a near clearance of 5 meters, andi havent finished growing. but regardless, ben will definitely be an amazing vaulter , and i see great heights in his future.
