Going his own way

Striding past the pole vault runway, Green Valley High School senior Collin Corrigan's thoughts are not likely on his brothers - state pole vault champion Danny, who is now vaulting at USC, and state runner-up Brendan, who vaults for the University of Arizona.

Corrigan grew up watching his brothers vault, but he was much more interested in basketball. "It looked really technical and I'm not that interested in the technical aspect."

Corrigan began running cross-country just to get in condition for basketball and found that he liked it. "I like pushing myself to the limit, and running long distance is a good way to do that. You can see how far you can push yourself and you've got to work through all the pain," he said.

When his conditioning for basketball landed him on the varsity cross-country squad as a freshman, Corrigan decided to just stick with running. "The solitude of running distance relieves my stress and gives me time to think," he said. With his talent and natural ability as a harrier, Corrigan's coach talked him into trying track. "He said, 'You don't have to vault. Let your brothers have that and you stick with distance,' and I was, like, 'All right.' "

So he has, leaving the legacy of vaulting glory to his older brothers and finding his own way with running long distances. "It's relaxing. I feel calm when I run. I'm at peace." sam.morris@lasvegassun.com
