Individual title 2 years in the making for Thunder pole vaulter Kearney

All Shea Kearney really had to do was not make mistakes, and an individual state championship in the pole vault would be his.

But at the Class 5A-Division I meet Saturday at Glendale Community College, Kearney decided to put on a show anyway.

Not only did the Desert Vista High School senior win the event, he jumped a state meet record and school record of 16 feet, 4.75 inches (5 meters). The mark bested his own personal record of 16-3 set at the Central Region Championship the week before.
Kearney said his first state title came as a relief.
