OREGON CITY – Oregon City High School senior Jared Hippler is fast proving himself one of the nation’s top young pole vaulters.

And he’s asking for help from the local community to help advance his career and improve his prospects for competing at the collegiate level.

Hippler has cleared an Oregon City High School record 16 feet in indoor pole vault competition over the winter.

Now he’s got his sights set on competing at the Nike Indoor National Track and Field Meet, scheduled in Boston March 13-15. The meet will feature the top high school pole vaulters in the nation, and right now Hippler ranks fifth.

“Given the opportunity, Jared has the potential to clear 16-6 or 16-10,” said Rick Baggett, who coaches Jared at the Willamette Striders pole vault facility in Oregon City. “But he’s maxed out on the equipment he has right now at 16 feet. He’s one pole short [of going 16-6 or 16-10]…

“I think we’ve found a bigger pole at Hood River High School that Jared could borrow [to compete at the Nike Nationals].”

Baggett said the trip to Boston is important for Hippler’s advancement, both for the experience and for the exposure. He said that college scouts will be well represented at the meet.

“Jared puts a lot of time in,” said Baggett. “And he works hard. It would be his first experience competing at the national level and it would be a pretty good experience.”

Jared’s dad, Joe Hippler, said that Jared will need financial assistance in order to make the trip to Boston, and he is asking for help from the community.

“Last summer Jared and his brother [Jack] qualified for Junior Olympic Nationals and did not go, due to the cost of the trip,” Joe Hippler said. “Now that he’s qualified for the Nike Indoor Nationals, he’d love to compete, if financially possible.”

Baggett said businesses and individuals in the community can help fund Hippler’s trip to the Nike Nationals by making donations, in Jared Hippler’s name, to the Willamette Striders Pole Vault Club.

Joe Hippler estimates the trip to Boston will cost $1,200 to $1,400. He says that his son could also use help with purchasing a new pole for the upcoming high school outdoor season. The cost of a pole will run close to $550, he said.

It is very simple just ask and you shall receive. Alot of the bigger meets offer to pay your way if you are at a standard. My son has never paid for a pole ,bag, or shoes and most meets are paid for even last year at 16.06. People will help. JUST ASK!!!!!!
