- Green Bay Southwest pole vaulter Andy Lindbergis used to breaking records. He broke the metro pole vault record last season by clearing 15 feet.
On Monday at Southwest High School, Lindberg broke his metro record with a vault of 15 feet, 5 inches, which ranks as the best in the state this year.
"It's unbelievable," Lindberg said. "It's not even the middle of the season, and it doesn't even feel like I've reached my best yet. Not by a long shot."
The conditions were perfect for Lindberg. The hot, dry air played a big part in his record-setting leap. The skies darkened and the wind began to pick up just as Lindberg completed his record-setting vault.
Even after the jump, however, Lindberg wasn't sure that the bar was going to remain in place.
"I saw it wobble back and forth a little bit and I was worried that it wasn't going to stay up there," Lindberg said. "But it did."
Lindberg then attempted 15-7, but came up just short. The official state pole vault record is 15-7, set by Wauwatosa West's Scott Synold in 1994.
Despite Lindberg's efforts, Green Bay East dominated the Trojans in the dual meet, emerging with a 109-37 victory.
