Tom Rutledge/Gill Athletics Pole Vault Safety and Technique Clinic

When: Dec. 21-23, 2002 (Saturday, Sunday and Monday)

Where: Missouri Southern State College, 3950 E. Newman Road, Joplin, MO 64801; Leggett & Platt Athletic Center

Who: Male and female pole vaulters (age 15 and older), coaches and parents

Director: Tom Rutledge, head men's track & field coach, Missouri Southern State College

Clinic Staff:

Joe Dial - Head track coach, Oral Roberts University. Coach of 57 NCAA Championship qualifiers and four Olympic Trial competitors.

Brian Carrel - Gill Athletics Technical Sales Representative. Indiana State University four-time national championship pole vault qualifier.

Bill Williams - Pole vault coach, Missouri Southern. Numerous MIAA pole vault champions and national championship qualifiers. Several NCAA Division II pole vault all-Americans.

Tommy Williams - Head vault coach, University of Oklahoma

Mike Lawrence - Missouri Southern strength coach

MSSC pole vaulters and track team members, including three all-America vaulters: senior Seth Isringhausen (four-time all-American), junior Chris Turner (two-time all-American), sophomore Matt Campbell (two-time all-American).

Camp Organization: We will focus on proper vaulting, equipment, safety and coaching techniques. There will be an emphasis on creating a safer environment for vaulters.

We will: teach and practice all phases of the vault; provide poles for all campers (10'-6" - 16' poles); offer a wide range of drills; emphasize the safety factors of vaulting.

Weight and strength training specific for vaulters

Our ultimate goal is to lead the way on the proper techniques and safety of vaulting. It is our desire to develop a better understanding and knowledge of the event and develop young athletes and coaches on the proper way to coach and participate.

Clinic Fee:

Athletes - $225
Includes 2 nights double-occupancy at local motel; 6 meals; transportation during camp; Gill multi-purpose sports helmet ($50 value)

Commuter Athlete - $175
Includes 4 meals, Gill multi-purpose sports helmet ($50 value)

Coach/Parent Observer - $200
Includes 2 nights double occupancy at local motel; 6 meals; transportation during camp, Gill multi-purpose sports helmet ($50 value)

Commuter Coach/Parent Observer - $150
Includes 4 meals, Gill multi-purpose sports helmet ($50 value)

Application deadline: First 80 applicants, apply early! No application guarantees after Dec. 14 or postmarked after Dec. 12.

Check-In Time & Location: 1-3 pm Saturday, Dec. 21 at Leggett & Platt Athletic Center/Young Gymnasium

Departure Time: 11:30 am, Monday, Dec. 23

General Information:

1. You should bring workout clothes, running shoes, spiked shoes (optional), towells, swimsuit, notebook and pencil.

2. Campers will be housed and served meals. Two athletes will room together according to age. Camp staff will stay at motel with campers. Parents or coaches may request to stay with their athlete.

3. All campers must have health and accident insurance. Please indicate company and policy number on application.

4. Complete all sections on the application and forward it to the address indicated. You cannot participate without all of the proper signatures.

5. A copy of this year's physical will be acceptable instead of the Physicians Statement.

6. All campers must abide by the camp rules. Failure to do so may result in dismissal from camp activities or may be sent home without a refund.

7. Any driver under age 18 must park their vehicle on the MSSC campus during the camp and use the transportation provided.

8. Missouri Southern trainer will be available during camp activities and at the motel.

9. Acceptance to this camp will be confirmed later by letter containing additional camp information. This camp admites all qualified applicants without regard to disability, race, color, religion, ethnic origin or sexual orientation.
