Sullivan wins at Open
Senior sets record in final state meet
Norwich Bulletin
NEW BRITAIN -- Jessica Sullivan can finally breath a big sigh of relief.
The Norwich Free Academy senior set a State Open record Wednesday with a pole vault of 11-6, a height she had her sights on since the start of the season. Sullivan hit that mark during the indoor track season and it took her a lot of hard work over almost an entire season to get back where she left off.

"It is a relief," Sullivan said. "It is so nice to be back up at that height again. It was just a matter of everything kind of coming together at that time. It all just kind of came together today."
Sullivan vaulted the 11-6 high bar on her first attempt after clearing a bar she chose to set at 11-3 also on the first attempt. Sullivan then set the bar at 11-8, but she knew the odds were against her at that point.
"By the time I got to 11-8 I was kind of physically and emotionally drained," Sullivan said.
Sullivan's next challenge will be at New Englands, which take place a day after NFA's prom and post prom party which lasts until 6 a.m.
"It's kind of hard to say (what to expect)," Sullivan, who set the Class LL meet record of 11-4 last week, said. "I'll be leaving (post prom) early and working off of very little sleep so it's kind of hard to say what I'm going to do. I'm just looking forward to New England's to have fun and do the best I can do."
The pole vault was a strong event for other ECC members as NFA's Kim Johnson finished third, Windham's Jordan Ritchie took fifth, and East Lyme teammates Lauren Bennett and Sara Muldoon shared seventh place.
