yaayy cornell, thats where i vault.... not for the team though. This isnt a problem of facilities, its a problem with the way they determine who goes to state and the meet of champs. THey shouldnt have a qualifier meet at all, if you hit a certain standard, say 13'6, OR you are the best in your section, you should go. Otherwise i would have been at the state meet this year as well. But this is no excuse for poor decisions on that day. I do not know the whole story, but i know that if the conditions arent favorable, go on a softer pole at lower heights, and work your way up. No hieghting should never happen. And if the mats arent right, talk to the official if really necessary. But mats are what you land on, unless they really were stopping the bend of the pole, in which they shouldnt be allowed.
The greater the challenge, the more glorious the triumph

I know that the tapering the pits do inhibit the bend of the pole at higher hights and if this is a problem at some facilties due to older pits then it should be part of the NFHS rules for the pole vault pit specifications. Perhaps a letter to the NFHS would be the best way to indicate the necessity for change rather than an article in the local paper. I understand that this may be difficult for some schools fincially, but if all the facilities cannot meet the NFHS rules then a championship meet cannot be held at such a facility. The idea of a qualifying height that could be obtained at any meet is something that is difficult to do since some (not all) high school meets may not always indicate the actual achieved heights since they are not always officated by qualified officials.
