I would like for some of the young guys and gals to notice that in his quest to jump 18', he started at 15' 6", then to 16' 6" etc. It's not how high you start but how high you finish. If you're having a great day you can blow through poles too fast to make an adjustment if you start too high. If you're off in some other way you can fix that at a lower height where you have a bit more room for error.

There is certainly a time and place to start high but you need to think out your process and reasoning. I know and watch a lot of smart vaulters that make such judgements after warm up based on how it went and the field size, NOT the night or practice before. All the best to all of you!! Bubba
