VC's King captures pole vault

BATON ROUGE - Track and field fans were treated to something special on Thursday at LSU's Bernie Moore Stadium.
Vermilion Catholic's Karley King and Basile's Amy Aguillard locked up in a sterling duel in the girls Class A pole vault at the LHSAA State Meet, with records falling with nearly each attempt.

Aguillard set the Class A record of 10-1 a year ago, but that mark was quickly in the rearview mirror as first one, and then the other set a new mark.

They each broke the mark three times, and King emerged as the victor and new record holder with a clearance of 11-4.
"I know her really well," King said of Aguillard, with whom she often trains. "I like friendly competition. I'm very competitive, but I like competing against someone I know. I've jumped 11-6 before, so I was just trying to do my best."

The weather was almost as much a challenge as Aguillard as a rain delay and wind shifts made each approach an adventure.

"The main thing was the wind," King said. "At first it was perfect, but it changed directions three or four times."
