It's almost certain that a Gwinnett County pole vaulter will bring home a state championship - possibly two - today when the boys state track and field championships begin at Jefferson High School.
Three out of the top five pole vaulters in the state are from Gwinnett, led by Mill Creek's Cameron Cheek. The junior has the second-highest vault (15 feet, 9 inches) in the state behind Jordan Scott from Class AAA Oconee County. The other two vaulters in the top five do not compete in the same classification as the Gwinnett County pole vaulters.
Cheek, along with Parkview's Michael Martin, the state runner-up last year in the pole vault, are the leaders in Class AAAAA, while South Gwinnett's Pete Bullard could be battling for third.
"If he jumps well he should do pretty good," Mill Creek track coach Rik Moore said. "Basically, if he does everything right - warms up properly, stays focused - he should win it."
Gwinnett could have a second pole vault champion in Class AA. Greater Atlanta Christian's Michael Hughes is the clear favorite with a season-high of 15-1, third best in Georgia this year.
