Cardinal Mooney's Janson aims for state title in the vault

SARASOTA -- Keeping up with his big sister is a monumental task for Cardinal Mooney senior pole vaulter Charles Janson.
But Janson can carve his own niche in Florida track and field annals by challenging for a state Class 2A title in the vault - an event 2001 Cardinal Mooney graduate Lacy Janson hopes to compete in at the Beijing Olympics.

Charles, who finished sixth at state last season with a vault of 13-feet, represents the Cougars' best chance for an individual boys title, according to veteran coach John Raleigh.

"Charles has a good opportunity to be one of the top pole vaulters in the state," Raleigh said.

Lacy Janson, who vaulted for Florida State, is a three-time NCAA champion who won the ACC indoor and outdoor titles all four years and is one of the United States' top-ranked women approaching the Olympic Trials. She finished fourth in last weekend's USA Track & Field Indoor Nationals in Boston with a vault of 14-feet, 7¼-inches.

Lacy Janson also was a high school national champion at Cardinal Mooney in 2001.

Charles will be pushed by fellow vaulter Jordan Romecki, a junior who finished 13th at state last season with a vault of 12-6. Cardinal Mooney's boys team is also strong in the 400 and 800, led by senior Spencer Garrison, and the shot put and discus, where Nick Watts has a chance to qualify for state.
