Ok first off so you wont worry, he will be at Nike and USATF's all healed up. But friday before the 7A state meet, the day after conference, he broke a pole again. This one because of a knick in it, i believe. It cut his hand open in the same spot as his sophmore year, and he got very deep stitches. He is getting them out thursday i believe. But State was the very next wednesday, only 5 days after he got stitches. The thing about it is, if you dont take first in the state meet, you cant go to the "meet of champs" compiled of the winners of each state meet, plus the next highest overall hieght across the state. You HAVE to do it at state. So he got out there with it taped and padded up as best as he could, and suffered through some warm ups. Its kind of hard to be intense on jumps when keeping pressure with your bottom hand gives you terrible pain. But he did it anyway, and went on a very soft pole on a very short run. He had trouble his first jump, and then blew through 2 poles the next 2 jumps. Its a shame, and i hate to see it happen to someone with spencers heart, but i know he is still destined for great things. His season isnt over, but the regular school season is. He has a lot to look forward to in the future, though. Im not sure if that sums it up, or if Morry has something to add, but thats what i know. It took a lot of heart to just get out there in the first place. Definitely something to admire

Spencer gets his stitches out today and will be good to go. He's still been able to get all of his training in even with the stitches, so the only thing lost was a state championship and a little runway time.
The vibration of the pole break split the skin about 3 inches around his thumb. 17 stitches and some Derma-bond took care of it.

Yeah i feel that pain. My freshman year here a week before the junior nats I broke a 4.90 17.1. Missed a trip to junior worlds in all likelihood. Pretty much the same length and a few more stitches. It is def. not fun at all. Sounds like hes healing fast though. Mine didn't close up well for quite a few weeks.
Best of luck to him and a speedy recovery

HE'S BACK! Spencer had his first practice today since the hand incident and smoked over 17'06" clean and almost made 17'08". He was on a 15'3" 190lb. Altius holding 15'00".
We made it clear before this session that he wasn't trying to work his way back or trying to find something that he already had. It was business as usual. Actually a little better than usual!
