AUSTIN – McKinney senior Britany Parker didn't defend her Texas Relays pole vault title Friday, but she was happy just to be competing again.
Parker, the state's top vaulter, had missed the last month of competition because of a torn ligament in her left ankle. She was injured while warming up before the March 11-12 Nike Indoor Nationals in Landover, Md.
Parker didn't seem bothered by the injury Friday at Texas' Mike A. Myers Stadium despite having gone through a track workout only once – Thursday – since suffering the injury.
"My adrenaline takes over," Parker said, "and I forget about it."
Parker cleared 12 feet, 10 inches – the same height she cleared last year – and finished second to junior Katie Veith of Homestead High School of Fort Wayne, Ind.
Veith also cleared 12-10 but did it with fewer jumps. Veith, who has cleared 14 feet, won at the Nike Indoor Nationals with a vault of 13-5¼. Parker finished second at the Nike Indoor Nationals – she competed despite the injury – by clearing 13-1½.
Parker, who set a stadium record (13-3) here at last year's state meet, missed on all three attempts Friday at 13-2. Parker never got above the bar on her first attempt at 13-2 and just missed on her next two tries. She nipped the bar on the way up on the second attempt and hit the bar on the way down on her final try.
"I don't exactly have my timing back yet," said Parker, who has competed in only four meets this season. "I wanted to come here and get some consistency before the district meet next week. I have five weeks to get ready for state."
