No girls team finished in the top 10, but Friendswood’s Laura Asimakis and Texas City’s Shelby Johnson made sure their teams were noticed.
Asimakis had an eventful weekend that she’d like to have back. She hit her knee on the second-to-last hurdle of the 300 hurdles Saturday to lose a place and finish fourth.
Asimakis, the defending champion in the pole vault, got off to a rough start in that event Friday. Her pole broke on her first attempt and hit her forearm so hard she thought that was broken, too. The pop of the pole was so loud it caused a false start in another race.
