Bell Lap: Gulley still the king
By ELADIO JAIMEZ
Let’s get one thing clear.
Jonathan Gulley is still the Rio Grande Valley’s pole vault king.
The St. Joseph’s Academy senior holds the Valley’s all-time pole vault record at 16-feet, 2 inches.
Gulley set the new mark last month at the Meet of Legends in Brownsville, but conflicting reports following the 30th Meet of Champions had Harlingen South’s Jared Ede as the new record-holder with a height of 16-2 ½.
Ede’s actual height was 16-0, a Cats Stadium and MOC record, but not the all-time best Valley mark. Rio Hondo’s Jimmie Heath held the previous meet and stadium record of 15-6 since 2003.
But the story here isn’t Gulley’s 16-2 or Ede’s 16-0. It’s Gulley and Ede.
The pair left for Austin on Thursday to compete in the 78th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays at Mike A. Myers Stadium. And not just with the purpose of simply enjoying the experience. They’re there to win. And who’s to say they can’t?
Ede and Gulley compete this afternoon in section A of the boys’ pole vault.
Ede became only the fourth male pole vaulter from the Valley to clear the 16-foot mark when he did it last week in Edinburg.
St. Joe’s Tom Rusteberg cleared it first in 2001, when his 16-0 was a new Valley record at the time. Heath broke that mark clearing 16-1 at the 32-3A meet in Hidalgo last year.
Gulley topped Heath’s height this season and, after talking to Ede, the Harlingen South senior feels confident he too could break the record before the season ends.
Ede, who on Thursday afternoon was watching the collegiate competition in Austin, was thrilled about his first Texas Relays.
"This is all very exciting," said Ede on the phone from Myers Stadium. "I’m just watching the college guys right now and they’re jumping really high. It’s gonna be fun."
Really, all Valley track and field fans should feel excited right about now.
St. Joe’s head coach Meme Garza said sending two Valley representatives to the prestigious meet was a huge accomplishment.
"It speaks well for the coaches, the program but mostly the kids," Garza said.
Keep track of these two vaulters. Gulley won the silver at the TAPPS state meet last year. Ede didn’t qualify for state, but he’s on pace to make a return to trip to Austin in May.
Look for both pole vaulters to make statewide headlines in the next month.
