Granite Bay star raises the bar
Pole vaulter Scott Roth sets a national best at the Meet of Champions.

It took Scott Roth a leap of 17 feet, 1 inch at Saturday's Sacramento Meet of Champions to clear up any confusion as to who is the best pole vaulter in the nation.
Roth thought he had the best mark nationally, a 16-9 set in the North Coast Top 8 on April 21 at James Logan High in Union City.

However, when he arrived at Hughes Stadium on Saturday, the Granite Bay junior found out otherwise.
"Kelly McGrath of Jesuit told me that some guy in Arkansas went 17 feet," said Roth, who broke the SMOC mark of 16-9 3/4 set in 1993 by Tye Harvey of Sonora. "I was caught off guard."

McGrath was correct. Though the news was slow to spread to the West Coast, the reports were confirmed before the invitational meet that Spencer McCorkel, a sophomore from Bryant High School in Norman, Ark., went 17 feet last week.

The news of McCorkel's feat didn't deter Roth from making good on his prediction of clearing 17 feet.

After his closest competitor, Kyle Bunge of St. Francis of Mountain View, dropped out at 15-3, Roth kept raising the bar until he finally missed his attempts at 17-3.

"That second jump at 17-3, I thought I had it," Roth said.

Roth was philosophical about his performance and the confusion over the national lead.

"It just goes to show you that you don't settle for a personal best," Roth said. "I've never been concerned about winning a meet. I just go out and try to jump better than I ever have."

In other invitational events at the SMOC:

Granite Bay's Stephanie Bagan was third in the girls pole vault at 11-9, Del Oro's Amanda Louie seventh at 11-3 and Woodcreek's Tara Rhein eighth at 10-9. Granite Bay's Eric Musker was tied for sixth in the boys at 14-3
