Boys' Pole Vault Preview

(--) You either have it... or you don't!
Of the state's 32 premier boys vaulters entering the 2005 outdoor season, nearly half of them hail from a grand total of just SIX schools! One of those schools -- St. Francis High on Mountain View in the Central Coast Section -- boasts five of those 32! Sac Joaquin Section schools Granite Bay and Jesuit court two apiece, as do San Diego Section field events power Rancho Bernardo and Southern Section aerial specialists from Temple City.
Granite Bay, however, is the only one with two mega-dandies. In 2003 state champion Ryan Shuler and 2004 state champion Scott Roth, Granite Bay lays claim to having the two best returnees in the nation for 2005, with lifetime bests of 16-6 and 16-4, respectively. Having additional (since graduated) excellent vaulters in its camp a year ago, the wealth of talent at Granite Bay no doubt eases some of the pressures of outside expectations on a single individual while allowing for healthy and prideful group competition from within. Shuler was the first freshman in state history to reach 16 feet in 2003, then taking a while in 2004 to generate the same momentum before reaching a lifetime-best 16-6 in winning the Sac Joaquin Section Finals. Roth soared in improvement throuhgout and worked his way onto the top state of the podium at state, with Shuler then placing second to a since-graduated out-of-stater at the following week's Golden West Invitational.
The fortunes of El Camino's Derek Scott might be watched closely by such non-vault powerhouses as James Logan and Long Beach Poly in 2005, due in large part to the fact that a high finish from Scott and corresponding performances from distance runners A.J. Acosta and Randy Pensinger could put the San Diego Section school in the statewide team title picture. Dcott is the state's only other 16-footer, clearing a lifetime-best 16-2 a few weeks back at the indoor Vault Summit extravaganza in Reno. Mater Dei's Greg Woepse, who misses the 2004 season due to back injury, rocketed back from the sidelines to elevate to a personal-best 15-6 at the Vault Summit in late January, establishing himself as the Southern Section vaulter to beat in 2005. Sophomore Casey Roche (an excellent 9th-grade clearance of 15-5 in summertime Junior Olympics competition in 2004) leads five returning Mountain View High vaulters scaling 13-10 or better a year ago, with those practice sessions no doubt being a sight to behold in 2005!
Granite Hills' Scott Finley, second at the San Diego Section Division I Finals a year ago, has cleared 15-6 to lead the rest of the preseason First-Teamers, with state-meet performers Kelly McGrath of Jesuit (SJS) and Miles McDowell of Murrieta Valley (SS) clearing 15-3.75 and 15-0, respectively. Vacaville's Daniel Byrne is the state's only other 15-footer, scaling 15-00.25 in a late April dual meet against Armijo.

Fresh off setting the national prep frosh pole vault record in 2004 (12-08),
Newport Harbor's Allison Stokke is rising quickly on the American vault scene!

(--) How high is high? Judging from Allison Stokke’s (Newport Harbor, Newport Beach-SS)     first-season success, she just might have a chance to find out. To say that she was a quick study in 2004 is an understatement. After clearing 11-0 in mid-May, she made 11-8 in league finals, 12-7 to finish third the Southern Section Finals and topped that with a state championship in a national freshman record of 12-8. Stokke continued with a consistent summer, finishing third at the Golden West Invitational (12-2 ½), third (but the first high schooler) at the National Junior Championship (12-1½) and finishing with a first at the USA National Junior Olympic (age 15-16 category) championships (12-6) in Eugene. However, the climb to the top looks to have become a bit more challenging with Mary Saxer (Lancaster, N.Y.) recently clearing 14-0 indoors, which betters the outdoor record of 13-8½ set by Kira Costa (San Joaquin Memorial, Fresno, Ca.) set in 2003.
Kristen Dormanen (Temecula Valley, Temecula) had eight meets over 12-0 including the Southern Section Finals, where she won in a personal best of 12-7, and a second at the Golden West Invitational. Her only real disappointment came at the State meet where she failed to qualify for the final. Jennae Bennett (Foothill, Santa Ana-SS) was fifth at State after setting a personal best of 12-0 in finishing second Southern Section Division II finals. As so many athletes do, Bennett took advantage of summer competition and upped her personal best to 12-3 in finishing tied for second at the USA National JO (17-18) competition in Eugene. Kate Matoon (Rancho Bernardo, San Diego-SDS) maintained a high level of performance throughout, starting with a third at the Arcadia Invitational in a personal best of 12-1, a fifth at the Mt. San Antonio Relays, a San Diego Section championship and a third in the state meet. Junior Taylor Franklin (St. Francis, MountainView -CCS) had wins at Stanford and the Sacramento Meet of Champions before finishing second at the Central Coast Section finals, tied for third at State and tied for third at the USA National Junior Championships.
The beachside region of the Southern Section has two juniors who are hoping to move up. Tori Pena (Edison High, Huntington Beach) finished just third in the Arcadia Invitational Open division but advanced to the State meet, where she tied for seventh. Pena had a seasonal best of 12-1 and had four meets over 11-9. Lyndly Tamura (Huntington Beach HS), with a best of 11-9, also reached the State meet but did not qualify for the final despite clearing 11-3¾. Sophomore Rachel Simmons (Rocklin-SJS) won the Sac-Joaquin Section final in a personal best of 11-9, but her 11-3¾ at State was not good enough to make the final.
Ana Papadakis (Peninsula, Rolling Hills Estates-SS) was the Arcadia Open winner in a personal best of 11-7 and had six meets over 11-0. It is interesting to note that Stokke, Pena, Tamura, Kelly MacLean (Edison, Huntington Beach) and Hilary Pohlman (Huntington Beach) all compete for the High Flyers Club, coached by Kevin Magula.

Feaster soars to new record for Vacaville
Congratulations, Jamie Feaster, you're in the record books.
The Vacaville High School track and field senior star set a new school record in the pole vault with a leap of 15 feet, 2 3/4 inches at Vintage on Tuesday in the Monticello Empire League opener.
Feaster broke the record formerly held by Rick Duncan, who set the standard with a mark of 15-2 1/2 in 1985, before Feaster was even born.
Feaster helped Vacaville's boys trounce Vintage 118-18. The Bulldogs' girls also won, 95-39.
Hedi Vandergraaf snared the pole vault with a leap of 6-2.

Mattoon in tune with early season pole vault victory
By: TOM SHANAHAN - For the North County Times
A high school track and field invitational in March serves many purposes, among them providing an early-season gauge for athletes hoping to build on last year's success at the state meet.
Count Rancho Bernardo High pole vaulter Kate Mattoon, third in last year's state meet at 12 feet, among those ahead of last season's pace. The senior won the Bronco Invitational on Saturday at Westview High with a mark (12-0) that is just an inch off her career best of 12-1.
"I thought my techniques were really good," said Mattoon, the two-time defending CIF champion. "I still have a lot to improve, but my techniques are better than they have been."
The boys pole vault has quickly heated up as defending CIF champion Derek Scott of El Camino saw his state outdoor leading mark of 16-0 tied by Granite Hills' Scott Finley. It's the first time in section history that two San Diego County vaulters have cleared 16-0 in the same season.
Scott, fourth at 14-6 on Saturday, earlier this year cleared 16-0 in a dual meet and 16-2 in a preseason indoor meet. He competed despite a bruised calf he suffered Thursday.
"It's a great year for the pole vault," Scott said.

Costa's teammate Scott Finley pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the day, winning the pole vault by clearing a personal best 16-0 and beating El Camino's Derek Scott, who cleared 16-2 earlier this year at the Reno Vault Summit.
In the girls pole vault, Rancho Bernardo's Kate Mattoon cleared 12 feet for the second time this year to win the event.

Ben DeYoung topped the pole vault despite a recent back injury
Kasey Wool posted three wins, with a time of 17.34 for the 100-meter hurdles, 49.91 for the 300-meter hurdles and 10-06 feet for the pole vault.
"She did that with the wind hitting her in the face, even in the pole vault," said Wood. "We would have entered her in the long jump, which she probably would have won too. But she had a strained calf muscle so she missed a fourth event.
Sophomore Kelly Clancey had a very good night, taking second places in the 300-meter hurdles, pole vault and triple jump, and competing in the mile relay.
In the boys' events, DeYoung won the pole vault with a height of 12-6 although he is coming off a back injury, which is still troubling him.
