Re: Summer Pole Vaulting in WA - 2009
Bellingham Parks and Recreation is providing summer vaulting June 9-Aug 11 at Civic Stadium. There are six sessions each week to choose from, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays 5-6:15 and 6:15-7:30 each day.
The fees are $70 for one session per week, $120 for two (10 or 20 sessions total, respectively). I will be coaching vaulters through a variety of drills, soft and hard bar vaulting. The goal is to keep numbers down, with no more than 6 vaulters per session, to allow for maximum runway time.
We will provide poles, but you are welcome to bring your own. You must be aged 13 or older with the will to fly.
Call Bellingham Parks and Rec or PM me for more info.

Re: Summer Pole Vaulting in WA - 2009
Hello vaulters,
I wanted to let you know that after getting feedback from some of you we have finally established a consistent pole vault practice time for the summer!! Yeah! Practices will start on Thursday, June 25th.
All practices will be held at Kings High School on Thursday's from 3-5pm throughout the summer. There will be Kings poles for athletes to use, and you are welcome to bring your own poles. The cost will be $25 per practice for CNW* members, and $30 per practice for non-Club Northwest members.
Cash or check are both acceptable forms of payment. All athletes will need to be a member of USATF (join at www.usatf.org), and will need to sign a liability waiver. The waiver is attached; those under 18 will need to have a parent/guardian sign the form as well. Waivers will also be available at each practice.
The goal of these clinics/practices is to help provide vaulters with a place to practice and improve over the summer. The practices are open to people of all ages and ability levels. Each session will provide the opportunity to jump at a crossbar/bungee. I also hope to introduce drills and technical coaching that will help with off season training and overall improvement for everyone. Coaching will be provided by myself, and/or Dan Stueckle. Dan and I worked together this spring as vault coaches at Kings.
If you have any questions please feel free to email me, or Dan (stuecd@spu.edu). We would also appreciate it if you could let us know if you know you will be attending practice. Since we both have busy summers, and other job commitments, it would be great to know if we will be the only ones at the track.
However, if there is a lot of interest there is also potential for us to add another practice time, either Monday afternoon/evening, or Saturday morning. Let us know if that work.s for you consistently.
Feel free to forward this info onto any vaulters/coaches you think would be interested. Dan and I look forward to seeing you all out there this summer!
Thanks,
Kate Conwell

Club membership also provides a discount at the summer all comers meets which take place on Tuesday (just pole vault at Kings) and Wednesday nights (all events at Shoreline Stadium). BELLINGHAM - For years, now, Whatcom County has shown its ability to produce some of the top track and field athletes in the state.
All you have to do is take a quick look at the Class 2A team track titles won by the Blaine girls' and the Lynden boys' and the 17 individual and relay state championships Whatcom County athletes won in May.
And by the looks of things at the Bellingham Parks and Recreation's summer all-comers track and field meets on Mondays at Civic Stadium, the future is looking just as bright.
All-comers track
DANNY GALOWSKI / THE BELLINGHAM HERALD |
Some of the best free entertainment in town is watching 2- and 3-year-olds run or seeing the enthusiasm of a 45-year-old pole vaulter, who took up the event only two years earlier, competing against his 15-year-old son.
There's literally an event for everyone for the hundreds of people who show up for the all-comers meets from June through August.
Longtime Bellingham tennis coach Steve Chronister and wife Nancy cracked broad smiles watching granddaughters Jordan Leach, 21/2, and Taylor Leach, 7, in the 50- and 100-meter dashes.
"We brought our kids to these meets and now it's the grandkids," Steve Chronister said of the all-comers meets, a Bellingham tradition for more than three decades. "I love this. There's so much joy here. And it can be pretty hilarious watching the little ones."
What's especially cool is the kids' smiles when they're handed ribbons at the finish line. No delayed gratification here.
Chronister says the sand in the long jump pit takes on a whole new meaning for pre-school jumpers.
"Jordan especially loves the long jump into the sand," he said with a knowing grin.
Many of the athletes are serious competitors keeping in shape, such as 16-year-old Squalicum pole-vaulter Cheyenna Pinley, who recently took fifth at Class 2A state as a junior.
"When the track season ends at school it's a sad feeling, but when I come out here every week for all-comers, it's just great to be a part of it," said Pinley, whose best is 10 feet, 7 inches, and who has long-range competitive goals. "Everyone is a slave to their passion, and I just love pole vaulting."
She said the program at Squalicum, which she has attended for two years, has done much to sharpen both her skills and enthusiasm.
Just as enthusiastic about vaulting is 45-year-old Len Van Ryswyk of Surrey, B.C.
He's a serious athlete who sprinted and high jumped in the World Masters Games in 2006 at Edmonton.
"I took up pole vaulting only two years ago," he said. "I didn't have access to coaching or equipment in the pole vault when I was in high school in Kamloops (B.C.). Now it's a family thing with my children."
On this night, he could take joy in watching his son Riley, 15, who will be a high school junior, beat him in the vault.
"I'm proud he's winning," said the elder Van Ryswyk, whose best vault is 10 feet.
Dick Henrie, recreation manager for the Bellingham Parks and Recreation Department, helps run the meets along with Lance Romo. Henrie takes special joy in hanging out at the pole vault area, since he's an assistant coach in the event at Western Washington University.
"We really appreciate what Dick has done with these all-comers meets, and with his pole vault club," Len Van Ryswyk said. "He deserves a lot of credit."
For Henrie, track never gets old.
"Wally Caviness and I started these meets in 1975 or 1976," Henrie said. "It's great when you see so many people out here, although tonight (July 6) the rain earlier today has scared some people away.
"Last week, when we had good weather, we must have had 700 people here, including the parents," he said. "It's always a fun time."
Entrants pay $3 per meet or $25 for a season pass, with a $75 family plan.
"One of our most popular events is the joggers' mile, where everyone can enter free," Romo said. "Everyone has a chance to win a t-shirt if they can guess their time within three seconds. They hear their first-lap split, and that's it, and they can't wear watches."
But creating an active environment for athletes of all ages is what Romo likes most about the Monday night meets.
"You see some of the same kids year after year," Romo said. "It's wonderful to see so many active kids."
